
How It All Started
Every step we take brings us closer to a stronger, self-sustaining home for our children. Here’s a look back at some of the key milestones that have shaped Familia Moja:
2007
October: Familia Moja officially opens its doors, enrolling 15 children in a local government primary school.
2008
September: We celebrate our 1st birthday with 24 children in care and 3 full-time staff.
October: Sandra Steiger, an Australian based in Geneva, joins as a Development Partner.
December: The Kenyan Government officially registered Familia Moja as a Charitable Children’s Institution.
2009
September: We celebrate our 2nd birthday with growing hearts and hope.
2010
January: All children are enrolled in private schools to improve educational outcomes.
June: Familia Moja purchases 3/4 acres of land near our rented home.
September: We celebrate 3 years, now caring for 31 children and supported by 4 full-time staff.
2011
January: Familia Moja Support Initiative (FMSI) is founded by Wambui and a local board to support the home and the Mang’u community.
June: Familia Moja receives a government grant as one of two selected children’s homes in the region.
September: Our 4th birthday sees us supporting 31 children, with an expanding outreach program.
December: Our oldest five children complete primary school (KCPE), and construction begins on our new permanent home.
2012
January: We host our first volunteer group, who help lay the home’s foundation and teach art in local schools.
September: Familia Moja turns 5, now home to 35 children and supported by 4 full-time and 3 part-time staff.
October: We receive a donation from the UN to support school fees.
2013
January: A second volunteer group helps paint dormitories and run art and drama classes.
February: 3 more children graduate from primary school and start secondary school. We now care for 37 children.
March: A major milestone—our children move into their very own home.
April: We lease adjacent land to grow fruits and vegetables—our first step toward agricultural sustainability.
December: Our first young adult finishes secondary school and prepares to start an Agri-Business course.
2014
January: Two more children graduate primary school and move into secondary school. We now care for 41 children, with 1 in college.
April: We host a Sexual and Reproductive Health seminar for the children.
May: We purchase equipment for our very own bakery, a key self-sustaining initiative.
September: Familia Moja celebrates 7 years with 42 children in care.
2015
January: A proud start to the year—five children graduate primary school, and two complete secondary school.
We now care for 42 children:
